Journals do not need to meet the Seal criteria to be accepted into DOAJ. There are seven criteria which a journal must meet to be eligible for the DOAJ Seal. DOAJ is a community-curated online directory that indexes and provides access to high quality, open access, peer-reviewed journals. The DOAJ Seal is awarded to journals that fulfil a set of currently seven Seal criteria related to accessibility, openness, discoverability, reuse and author rights. It does not judge the scholarly quality of the articles but it acts as a signal to readers and authors that the journal has liberal use and reuse terms, author rights and adheres to the highest level of openness.
